Sha Tin Festival 2014 - Shatin to Central Link Sha Tin District Hoarding Drawing Competition

To enhance awareness of the community development and of new railway project among students, the MTR Corporation has organized the “Shatin to Central Link Sha Tin District Hoarding Drawing Competition” with the support from Sha Tin Festival Committee 2014. Primary and secondary students studying or living in the district are invited to submit drawing with the theme “Sha Tin to become more vibrant with the new generation rail connection“

The winning entries will be displayed on the hoarding of the SCL construction sites in Hin Keng to beautifying the environment.

Roving exhibitions for SCL interchange stations

Roving exhibitions will be toured at 4 interchange stations of the SCL including Tai Wai, Diamond Hill, Hung Hom and Admiralty. Passengers could learn more about the modification and enhancement works at respective stations.

Wong Tai Sin District Council Members visit Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Nu-wa (24 July 2014)

To better understand the operation of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and works progress of Shatin to Central Link, some Wong Tai Sin District Council Members visited the construction site at the former Tai Hom Village on 24 July 2014 to share the joy on accomplishment of a new milestone and learned more on the operation of TBM as well as its advantages.

The first SCL TBM, Nu-wa has been launched in mid-July and is responsible for the 1,700 metres tunnel boring works from the former Tai Hom Village at Diamond Hill to Ma Chai Hang. A noise enclosure has been erected at TBM shaft to minimize the impacts to nearby residents.

Fourth Round of Information Zone on Platform Modification Works for Ma On Shan Line Stations

The 4th round of Information Zone will be toured at nine stations of Ma On Shan Line from 24 June to 22 July 2014 so passengers could learn more about the platform modification works along Ma On Shan Line. Passengers are welcome to exchange views with our engineers and learn more about the upcoming works at these stations.

The 4th round of Information Zone will take place from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at respective MTR stations on the following dates:

Kowloon City District Council Members visit the archaeological survey at To Kwa Wan Station construction site (10 June 2014)

To learn about the progress of the archaeological survey and the construction works, Kowloon City District Council Members visited the work site of To Kwa Wan Station on 10 June. Representatives from the archaeological specialist employed by the Contractor and the Corporation provided information about the construction works and the archaeological survey.

LegCo members visit the archaeological survey at To Kwa Wan Station construction site (3 June 2014)

To learn more about the progress of the archaeological survey and the construction works, members of Panel on Transport and other Panels of the Legislative Council visited the work site of To Kwa Wan Station on 3 June 2014. Representatives from the Antiquities and Monuments Office, the archaeological specialist employed by the Contractor and the General Manager – SCL Dr Philco Wong provided information about the construction works and the archaeological survey.

Community visits to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival (May 2014)

The SCL Projects Team and contractors celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival with over 200 elders from Rhythm Garden Centre for the Elderly and Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service Ma On Shan District Elderly Community Centre in May. The team shared joy with the elderly by singing classic songs and playing group games together.

The participants also received a healthy rice dumpling and fruits as a token of gratitude.

The Projects Team exercised together with the seniors.

The seniors enjoyed singing and were very delighted when they received the gifts.

Hin Keng Information Counter Opens (February 2014)

The “Shatin to Central Link Hin Keng Information Counter” is now open at the Hin Keng Shopping Centre to keep the public abreast of the latest progress of Hin Keng Station construction and related works under the SCL project, so as to maintain close contacts with the community. Public members are welcome to visit the Information Counter for works details and share their views on the project.

Celebrating Lunar New Year with the Community (January 2014)

To celebrate the Year of the Horse, SCL Projects Team and contractors distributed Chinese fai chun to community members as a token of appreciation for their support to the project. The teams also engaged in festive activities with the seniors at Tung Wah Group of Hospitals’ Wilson T.S. Wang Elderly Community Centre, Ho Yam Care and Attention Home for the Elderly (sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen), and visited singleton elderlies with Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Oi Man Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, bringing them care and warmth for the holiday.

Site visit to preliminary works for the APG project by Legislative Council’s Subcommittee on Matters Relating to Railways (10 January 2014)

To enhance the understanding on the Automatic Platform Gates (APGs) installation and the related platform strengthening works along the East Rail Line (EAL) Stations, the Legislative Council’s Subcommittee on Matters Relating to Railways led by Chairman Mr Michael Tien, BBS, JP, together with Under Secretary for Transport and Housing Mr Yau Shing Mu paid a visit to the mock-up procedures at Sha Tin Freight Yard and the Racecourse Station on 10 January 2014.

The complicated procedures involved in platform strengthening were vividly shown to the Members by a mock-up platform. General Manager – Shatin to Central Link Electrical & Mechanical Mr T M Lee further explained that works would only be carried out for a few hours overnight to avoid interrupt normal train service. It was demonstrated on the spot how noises could be reduced by around 20 decibels using the mobile sound insulation booth, so as to minimize the impacts to the nearby residents.

Shatin to Central Link Kowloon City District Hoarding Drawing Competition 2013 (21 December 2013)


Over 200 students from secondary and primary schools at Kowloon City District unleashed their creativity, participated in the SCL Kowloon City District Hoarding Drawing Competition, and drew their ideal SCL.

Judges from the Kowloon City District Council, the Kowloon City District Office, the Corporation and the contractor selected 12 outstanding drawings over 200 submissions and named the Champion, the 1st and 2nd Runner-up, and the three Merit Awards of the Primary and Secondary School Sections. The Most Participation Awards go to S.K.H. Good Shepherd Primary School (Primary Section) and Kowloon True Light Middle School (Secondary Section).

The prize presentation ceremony was held in December 2013 at Hung Hom Community Hall. Guests presented certificates to encourage the winners to keep up their good works. The winning pieces will be displayed on the hoardings of SCL works sites in Kowloon City District.

Shatin to Central Link (Shatin Section) Public Forum organised by Shatin District Council (4 December 2013)

MTR representatives attended the “Shatin to Central Link (Shatin Section) Public Forum” in Hin Keng, organised by Shatin District Council on 4 December. Engineers introduced works progress in the district, including Hin Keng Station and its related works, and the platform modification works along Ma On Shan Line stations. Participants could also learn more about project information and updates from exhibition panels at the public forum.

Handover of New Territories South Animal Management Centre and Shatin Plant Quarantine Station (29 November 2013)

To make way for the construction of Hin Keng Station, the existing New Territories South Animal Management Centre and Shatin Plant Quarantine Station of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) at Che Kung Miu Road is to be relocated to To Shek, Shatin. The reprovisioning works completed smoothly and ahead of schedule. The Corporation handed over the new facilities to AFCD on 29 November for operations.

Construction of Hin Keng Station begins (13 November 2013)

A Bai Sun ceremony to celebrate the start of construction of Hin Keng Station and Approach Structures was held on 13 November. Projects Director of MTR Corporation Mr TC Chew, General Manager-SCL Dr. Philco Wong, The Chairman of Shatin District Council Mr Ho Hau-cheung, BBS, MH, Government Engineer of Railway Development Office of Highways Department Mr Henry Chan, JP, Chairman of Traffic and Transport Committee of Shatin District Mr Yiu Ka-chun, the Convener of Working Group on Development of Major Transport Infrastructures in Shatin District Ms Nancy Lam attended the ceremony as officiating guests, together with the guests from Shatin District Councils and local communities as well as the MTR team to wish for the smooth and successful works implementation.

Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival in the Communities (September 2013)

The SCL Project Teams and contractors paid visits to the communities and distributed mooncake to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with over 200 elders and children in mid-September. The Teams visited kindergartens, youth centre and elderly centre at various districts including BGCA Ma On Shan Integrated Services Centre in Shatin, ECFB Creativity Kindergarten in Tsz Wan Sha, YMCA of Hong Kong Nursery School in To Kwa Wan and Oi Man Neighbourhood Elderly Centre in Ho Man Tin.

The SCL project information and etiquette in train were disseminated at the visits. Each of our guests received mooncake as a token of gratitude.

Active participation for smooth implementation of TTMS

Ma Tau Wai Road is the major road for most of the residents from Kowloon City, To Kwa Wan and Ma Tau Wai in West Kowloon District. To facilitate the construction of Shatin to Central Link, the MTR Corporation has implemented Temporary Traffic Management Scheme (TTMS) in stages on Ma Tau Wai Road from December 2013. Before the commencement of TTMS, the MTR Corporation and the contractor Samsung – Hsin Chong Joint Venture maintain close liaison with District Council members, schools, local stakeholders and provide latest information to facilitate smooth implementation of TTMS.

During the works period, the contractor Samsung – Hsin Chong Joint Venture has set up caring ambassador team to minimize the impacts to the community. The caring ambassador team distribute flyer to residents along the bus stop at Ma Tau Wai Road, offer help to the residents when passing through the zebra crossing and take care the students to get off school buses.

Samsung – Hsin Chong Joint Venture won Gold Stakeholder Engagement Award in MTR Projects Quality, Safety, Environmental and Stakeholder Engagement Award Scheme in the second half of 2013 to praise for its active efforts and well preparation in the implementation of TTMS.

Community visits to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival (June 2013)

SCL Project Team actively participates in community activities. To celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with the locals, the Team, together with representatives of the contractors, visit elderly centres and youth centre at various districts including Hong Kong PHAB Association Jockey Club Shatin Integrated Service Centre for Children & Youth in Shatin, PLK Mrs. Maria Cheung Social Centre for the Elderly in Wong Tai Sin, SKH Lok Man Alice Kwok Integrated Service Centre in To Kwa Wan and SKH Holy Carpenter Church District Elderly Community Centre in Hung Hom in early June.

The Team shared the joy with more than 200 elders and young children and introduced to them the SCL by playing games and singing songs. Each participant received a healthy rice dumpling and fruits at the end of the visit as a token of gratitude.

Visit for mock-up site for platform structure strengthening works on the East Rail Line (April – May 2013)


Platform structure strengthening works along East Rail Line stations starts in Oct 2013 to pave for the retrofitting works of the Automatic Platform Gates. Members from the Traffic and Transport Committees of four District Councils along the East Rail Line, namely Yau Tsim Mong, Shatin, Tai Po and North, were invited to visit the mock-up site of the strengthening works at the former Hung Hom Freight Yard from April to May in 2013 to learn more about the works progress and challenges.

At the visits, councilors learned more about the complexity and constraints of carrying out the platform structure strengthening works during night time. They were especially impressed by the tailored made noise enclosure which could effectively reduce noise of works.

Shatin to Central Link Tsz Wan Shan Hoarding Drawing Competition Prize Presentation Ceremony (12 April 2013)


The 12 outstanding drawings below have won from over 500 submissions for the SCL Tsz Wan Shan Hoarding Drawing Competition!

The competition was a great success thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the students in Tsz Wan Shan District. Judges from the Corporation, the Wong Tai Sin District Council, and the Wong Tai Sin District Office have chosen the champion, the 1st and 2nd runner up, and the three Merit Awards for the Primary and Secondary School Sections respectively.

The prize presentation ceremony was held on 12 April at Tsz Wan Shan (South) Community Centre. Guests from the Wong Tai Sin District Council, Wong Tai Sin District Office, and Highways Department presented certificates to encourage the winners to keep up their good works and to build a better society. Lunar New Year Fun Day by the S.K.H. Good Shepherd Primary School
(6 February 2013)

To maintain close contact with the community, MTR SCL projects team and contractor Samsung - Hsin Chong Joint Venture of the Kowloon City Section participated in the Lunar New Year Fun Day organised by the S.K.H. Good Shepherd Primary School. We shared the joy of Lunar New Year with students and enhanced their knowledge of SCL by playing booth games.

Public Forum on SCL by Shatin District Council's Working Group on Development of Major Transport Infrastructures in Shatin District
(3-4 February 2013)

To enhance public awareness on the SCL and strengthen communications with the community, MTR engineers attended two rounds of public forums organized by the Working Group on Development of Major Transport Infrastructure in Shatin District under Shatin District Council at Fortune City One and Hin Keng Shopping Centre respectively. Public enquiries were addressed in the forums. Panels were exhibited on-site to provide update on the latest progress of the project.

" Railway Know It All " Comic

To translate complicated railway knowledge into easily understandable language, the MTR Corporation, cooperated with the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) and the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), invites a group of Higher Diploma students studying in Creative Media to create a series of comic stories on railway related topics. Starting from September 2012, not only at the Corporation's new railway project websites where you can find these fun and creative stories, they are also available on newspaper to introduce railway knowledge. The comics will be printed and distributed to schools, libraries and youth centres.

Shatin to Central Link Information Centre Opening (15 October 2012)

To maintain close contact with the community, the SCL Information Centre is opened at the Kowloon City district on 15 October. Representatives from Kowloon City District Council, District Office, related government departments and the contractor of SCL were invited to join the opening ceremony to commemorate the opening of the centre.

Public are welcomed to visit the SCL Information Centre for the latest project information and publications.

Station Information Zones on Ma On Shan Line Modification Works

In order to accommodate for the future operations of the SCL, modification works will be carried out at stations along the Ma On Shan Line, including extension of the station platforms and roofs, retrofitting of automatic platform gates as well as enhancement of electrical and mechanical facilities. Station Information Zones on Ma On Shan Line Modification Works are to be held along the Ma On Shan Line stations on a regular basis. The kick-off ceremony was held on 10 Oct. The first round of information zones will be toured along the 9 stations of the Ma On Shan Line on specific dates between 10 Oct to 15 Nov. Passengers are welcome to join and learn more about the modification works and share with us.

Construction works begin at Tsz Wan Shan (4 October 2012)

Wong Tai Sin District Council Chairman Mr Li Tak-hong, MH, JP, Vice Chairman Dr Wong Kam-chiu, MH, Chairman of Traffic and Transport Committee Mr Joe Lai Wing-ho, and other Councillors celebrated with the MTR construction team for the commencement of the Improvement Works on Pedestrian Link Facilities in Tsz Wan Shan. A traditional bai sun ceremony took place at Po Kong Village Road works site on 4 October to wish for smooth construction works.

Entrusted by the Government, MTR Corporation will carry out improvement works on pedestrian facilities to enhance the connectivity between Tsz Wan Shan and Diamond Hill Station of the Shatin to Central Link. The works are expected to be completed in phase between 2014 and 2016.

The Corporation organises the "Shatin to Central Link Tsz Wan Shan Hoarding Drawing Competition" to enhance students' understanding of the Shatin to Central Link (SCL).

Students in the Tsz Wan Shan area are invited to submit drawings with the theme "Better Connectivity with New Railway Line". Awarded entries will have the chance to be displayed on the hoardings of the SCL construction sites in Tsz Wan Shan, making the community more lively colourful.

The SCL Project Ground Breaking Ceremony (22 June 2012)

The Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR Government Mr Stephen Lam, Secretary for Transport and Housing Ms Eva Cheng, the Chairman of MTR Corporation Dr Raymond Ch'ien, Chief Executive Officer Mr Jay Walder officiated at the Ground Breaking Ceremony of the SCL project with over 100 guests from the community and the government joined to witness the important milestone of the project on 22 June, which marked the commencement of construction work.

Exhibition on Shatin Section of the SCL by Shatin District Council (July–August 2011)

We supported the "Exhibition on Shatin Section of the Shatin to Central Link", organised by Shatin District Council, at Hin Keng Shopping Centre and Ma On Shan Plaza in order to raise public awareness on the SCL.

Engagement with CUHK Architecture Students (Jan–May 2011)

As part of its community engagement programme, the Corporation supported the architectural course "Links and Hubs" offered by the School of Architecture, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Students of the course were exposed to strategic railway planning, design and development through visits to railway facilities as well as constructive exchange with MTR railway professionals. They also came up with architectural proposals for stations along the Shatin to Central Link.

Chai Wan Barging Point and Tsing Yi Batching Plant Visit (18 September 2009)

During construction of the SCL, certain sites along the railway alignment will be used as temporary works areas for storing machinery and materials. A visit was organised to Chai Wan Barging Point and Tsing Yi Batching Plant for members of Kowloon City District Council and representatives of Owner’s Committee in Kowloon City District, to provide more details on the operations of construction facilities and all necessary measures to minimize the project's impact on the public and the environment.

Shatin to Central Link Tunnel Boring Machine Naming Competition

The Shatin to Central Link Naming Competition Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 27 June 2014 at MTR Headquarters.  Prizes for individual and top participating school were given out.

Dr Philco Wong, MTR General Manager-SCL, said the suggested names of the TBMs are full of creativity and gave thanks to the students for their imagination vitalizes the TBMs.  The winners took photos with the TBM cartoon characters which are named by them.

In this competition, there were over 7,000 students submitting more than 30,000 entries of different names for the judging panel, consisted of representatives from LegCo, government department, professional bodies and contractors, to choose seven best names for the TBMs in March.

The end of the naming competition means the TBM will soon be launched.  Nu-wa will be the first TBM to be launched and will start constructing tunnels between Ma Chai Hang and Diamond Hill Station in July.  Stay tune to follow Nu-wa.

Advantages of using TBM

Building tunnels by TBM will be carried out entirely underground thus effectively reducing the impact to road traffic, the community and the environment. The simultaneous installation of the permanent tunnel wall also reduces the risk of settlement and maintains the structural safety of buildings in the vicinity.
