Environmental Protection

  • The Corporation will ensure that the design, construction and operation of SCL complies with the relevant statutory environmental protection requirements. All necessary measures will be implemented to reduce the project's impact on the public and the environment.

    Independent consultants have been appointed to carefully assess the possible environmental impacts arising from the SCL's construction and operation and propose mitigative measures. Typical mitigative measures will include:


    Air quality

    • Watering to suppress dust in active work areas

    • Cover of stockpile areas with waterproof fabric to prevent fugitive dust

    • Use of dump truck with cover


    Noise

    • Use of low-noise machines

    • Erection of noise barriers or covers

    • Use of noise insulating fabric to cover machinery


    Waste Management

    • Recycling of demolition waste wherever possible

    • Use of drip tray to prevent contamination

    • Chemical waste are handled in accordance with the Code of Practice on the Packaging, Handling and Storage of Chemical Wastes

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report

    The independent consultants appointed by the Corporation have conducted five environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies to assess the possible environmental impact due to the construction and operation of the SCL, such as water quality, noise, dust and waste management, and to recommend mitigation measures under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance. The five studies cover different sections of the SCL, which include:

    • SCL – Advance Works at Ho Man Tin Station – As the advance works at Ho Man Tin Station have been entrusted to the KTE project, The Environmental Impact Assessment of this project was carried out together with that of the KTE.   • Environmental Monitoring and Audit

    The Corporation keeps monitoring the construction impact of the SCL works on the environment. Regular monitoring data and monthly reports will be submitted to the Environmental Protection Department and made available for public viewing.
